Search CasestudiesThis student started at Seagull Recycling in 2006 when he was 14 years old. He came with multiple problems, one of which that he had been permanently excluded due to poor attendance.
He was enrolled on the Solutions 4 programme, managed and run by the Emotional and Behavioural Support Services of Lincolnshire Local Education Authority. This entitled him to a full education at Seagull Recycling Ltd every day of the week until he finished his compulsory education period.
When He first started, he had challenging educational standards and showed patchy attendance during the first part of the term with us. This rapidly improved to an extent where almost full attendance was reached within a very short amount of time. Within the first few weeks of beginning his education at Seagull, he undertook various initial assessments for his Life Skills, including information and communication technology, application of number, and communication. These results give us a base line to work from and enabled us to develop a programme of learning specifically for his needs. Upon working and getting to know the student, it soon became clear that this lack of attendance was due to his low level of self esteem as a result of his low attainment.
He responded well to this individual and caring educational system, and over subsequent months he became a valued member of the student body and worked hard on his personal and educational development. His practical skills and work ethic were recognised early and developed from a base line so that he could develop his work experience skills to a standard acceptable in post compulsory education and the working world.
He managed to achieve in several different vocational and academic areas and eventually left with a variety of Nationally Accredited qualifications. His attitude to work improved markedly from an already established level to the extent that upon entering the Entry to Employment programme, he has been successful in gaining work experience here at Seagull one day per week. He now works as an adult placement with the Green Fingers Gardening and Landscaping team, and is based at the Environmental Site. He also undertakes a wide variety of Site work in Conservation ranger type activities.
